About Us
In 2003, consumers across Alabama were vocalizing the need to reestablish a consumer organization. The Department of Mental Health and Mental Retardation (DMH/MR) and the Alabama Disabilities Advocacy Program (ADAP) coordinated grassroots meetings that became known as "Rekindling the Spirit." Consumer input was also solicited at the 2004 Annual Recovery Conference. The mission was to unite consumers of mental health services statewide.
In February 2004, DMH/MR announced a Request for Proposals to provide statewide consumer advocacy activities and develop a statewide consumer organization. Through the "Rekindling the Spirit" grassroots organizing meetings, a steering committee was established to discuss the viability of applying for this funding. In the proposal to DMH/MR, a statewide consumer advocacy organization was proposed that would focus on providing education and training, employment, housing, and advocacy. In April 2004, the "Rekindling the Spirit" steering committee was notified that it had been awarded the DMH/MR funding.
In April 2004, the first Board meeting of the steering committee was held in Montgomery, AL. Officers were elected and goals were identified to fulfill contract requirements. In June 2004, the first town meeting was held in Opelika. This meeting was a resounding success and built a foundation for ensuing town meetings. Guest speakers, mental health advocates, and consumers were all given a voice.
By July 2004, the Board approved the name CONTACT: Wings Across Alabama. Using the symbolism of geese flying in formation, the "WINGS" name became an apt logo for the organization. An office was established in Montgomery, and funding from DMH/MR began at this time.
Today, WINGS focuses upon outreach, education, and advocacy. We help articulate the voice of consumers in the planning process with DMH/MR. We also provide educational programs that focus upon recovery (like the Wellness Recovery Acton Plan developed by Mary Ellen Copeland, PhD). We also provide technical assistance to consumers via the Office of Technical Assistance of NASMHPD. These programs are funded in part through grants from CMHS and SAMHSA.
